Here it is why an Extra Second was added to Indian Time

The Atomic clock at National Physics Laboratory (NPL) in New Delhi struck 23:59:59 during last night after which it has been programmed to add an extra second for the New Year so as to compensate for the slowdown in the rotation of Earth. A lead second has been added to the clock at 5:29:59 yesterday. This extra second may not make any difference in this busy life however it has a huge impact on the satellite navigation along with communication and astronomy.

NPL added this extra second under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (SCIR). NPL is one of the oldest laboratories in the country which has five atomic clocks. 36 leap seconds have been adjusted
