Maharashtra farmers likely to end protest soon

After a gruelling 6 day march over hundreds of kilometers to bring the government’s attention to their woes, the farmers in Maharashtra are likey to end the protest soon. The government, headed by CM Devendra Fadnavis, and the farmers, who have united under the banner of the All India Kisan Sabha, have come to an understanding. The government has promised that the farmers’ problems will be addressed in 2 months and will be giving a written assurance to this effect.

This agreement comes amidst uproar caused by political leaders – CM Fadnavis’s statement that most of the protestors are ‘technically tribals, not farmers’ and BJP MP Poonam Mahajan’s ‘urban Maoists’ remark. While a controversy is imminent over these remarks, the meeting between a delegation of the farmers and a government committee was a success and the protest at the Azad Maidan will end soon.
