Mecca Masjid case struck down

The Nampally NIA court has struck down the 11 year old long Mecca Masjid blasts case, declaring all the accused as innocent of the crime. The court opined that the prosecution had failed in proving the involvement of the accused. Chargesheets had been filed against RSS pracharak Devendra Gupta, Lokesh Sharma from Madhya Pradesh, Swami Aseemanand from Gujarat, a private employee Bharat Mohan Lal Ratheeshwar, and Rajender Choudhary. Testimonies from the aggrieved parties, 226 witnesses and 411 documents were submitted to the court.

 

 

On 18 May 2007, blasts in the Mecca Masjid during the Friday prayers had killed 9 people. Another five people were killed in the ensuing riots and police firing. 14 people lost their lives in this incident, and over 58 were injured.

 

 

10 people were named as accused in this case by the NIA. Of them, one died, while the court investigated four of them. Chargesheets have been filed against five of the accused, and the court’s sentences were awaited.
