Rajasthan Minister's Aswachch Bharat

The BJP’s flagship programme Swachch Bharat is an ambitious effort to clean up the country. States with BJP governments are especially committed to this programme. One such state is Rajasthan. The Jaipur Municipal Corporation is known to be working very hard to keep the roads and public spaces of Jaipur neat and clean. However, a few people seem to be incapable to breaking the ‘traditional’ Indian habit of littering, spitting and relieving themselves on walls. Ironically, Rajasthan Health Minister Kalicharan Saraf belongs to this category. Saraf was on his way to some programme, when he stopped his car to relieve himself on the nearest wall. This spectacle of a health minister urinating in public was captured by a passerby on his smartphone.

According the rules of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, the fine for public urination is Rs 200. When the media visited Kalicharan’s office for his response on the matter, he declined to comment saying it was a very small issue. The Congress party, on the other hand, is making most of this opportunity. Rajasthan Congress Vice-President Archana Sharma commented that BJP’s own ministers were flouting the aims of the ambitious and expensive Swachch Bharat programme. The BJP recently lost three by-elections in Rajasthan, and such behaviour of its ministers is sure to further defame the Vasundhara Raje government.
