Raising strong objection over MoS Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey’s statement that the Centre does not have data on health workers who died due to Covid-19, The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Wednesday shot a fuming open letter criticising the government.
In the letter, IMA has accused the government of being indifferent to the sacrifice of doctors and health care workers working on the frontline while the statistics of healthcare workers who died due to COVID went missing from the 19th paragraph of the statement on September 14th.
“No nation has lost as many doctors and health care workers like India. If the government doesn’t maintain the statistics of the total number of doctors and health care workers who sacrificed their life due to the pandemic, it loses the moral authority to administer the Epidemic Act 1897 and the Disaster Management Act,” the IMA said in the letter.
In fitting reply to the central government, IMA in the letter published the list of 382 doctors who have died in the pandemic due to Covid-19. The organisation also demanded the government that healthcare workers who have died during Covid-19 duty should be considered as “martyrs’ and their families, children deserve solace and solatium from the national government.
Besides making various suggestions and feedback to the health ministry, the members of IMA sought Prime Minister’s appointment to share the concerns and cooperation in their letter.
