She was a charismatic leader who led Tamil Nadu with her unprecedented leadership. People affectionately call her “Amma” and for the members of her party AIADMK, she is “Puratchi Thalaivi”, the supreme leader.
The incredible journey of Jayalalithaa, former Chief Minister in the history of Tamil Nadu films and politics is irreplaceable. ‘Veda Nilayam’, the official residence of this dynamic leader witnessed many highs and lows of Jayalalitha which now hit to the news with Tamil Nadu government acquiring it.
Promulgated an ordinance to take over the residence of ‘Thalaivi’, Tamil Nadu government has listed out all movable and immovable assets in the public domain. The state government also deposited Rs 67.9 crore in the city Civil Court for acquiring Veda Nilayam to convert it into a memorial.
Treated to be a sacred place for many ardent AIADMK leaders and followers, Poes Garden residence is said to possess many valuable assets which are dear to the actor-turned-politician. As per the inclusions made by Tamil Nadu government in Gazette Extraordinary, the residence has 32,721 items of movable property.
The list of items includes 14 gold items weighing 4 kg and 372 gm; 87 silver items weighing 601 kg and 424 gm; and 162 small utensils, 11 TV sets, 10 refrigerators, 38 air-conditioners and 556 pieces of furniture. Amongst which, 108 cosmetic items 10,438 pieces of clothing including footwear used by the dynamic leader turned out to be the valuable possessions for the memorial.
It can be noted that after years of struggling with various health ailments, Jayalalitha spent her last stage in this residence before being shifted to the hospital. Though Jayalalithaa’s niece and nephew J Deepa and J Deepak who have staked claim to the property opposed the move of converting into a memorial, the plan finally took shape with state government acquiring it.
