Sri Lanka’s newly elected president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who comfortably won Saturday’s presidential election with about 52 per cent of the ballots, is now all gushed up with the congratulatory messages and a series of calls from various supremos around the world. But this particular phone call and the invitation drew the attention of the global media also.
Sources from Islamabad confirmed that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday telephoned newly-elected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to congratulate him on his electoral win. In a long and warm conversation, Imran Khan has invited the newly elected President to visit the farmer’s country. Reportedly, Rajapaksa has accepted the invitation and promised that he would soon visit Pakistan. This news was confirmed by the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo on Wednesday. The leaders have also spoken about each other’s desire to further fortify bilateral cooperation in diverse areas. It was already announced that the Sri Lankan president will travel to India on November 29 upon the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
