In one of the rare surgery which went on for more than 24 hours, medical staff in All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) separate conjoined twins who were joined at the hip and lower back. The surgery reportedly took place on Saturday while the twins are stable under close care and monitoring.
AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria stated that two-year-old girls based from two-year-old girls have had fused pelvis, spinal bones, spinal cord, intestines and shared a common rectum besides having abnormalities of the heart and major blood vessels. Also, the uterus had to be separated and reconstructed.
A team of 64 healthcare workers led by Dr Minu Bajpai, HoD, Department of Paediatric Surgery were involved in the surgery which began at 8.30 am on Friday continued past 9 am on Saturday. This is not the first time AIIMS performed a challenging surgery. In 2017, AIIMS had successfully separated twins Jaga and Balia who were conjoined at the head.
