Billionaire founder and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos arrives in India on Tuesday and was spotted paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the Raj Ghat memorial in New Delhi. While the representatives of Bezos’ office refused to reveal the reason behind his visit, it took prominence as it came close on the heels of Competition Commission of India announcing an anticompetitive investigation into Amazon and Flipkart. The leading CEO took to his social media handles to drop the news of his visit with a video of him at Raj Bhavan.
While the national media speculated his visit to coincide with Amazon Smbhav, the company’s summit aimed at bringing small and medium businesses together, business analysts have another story. Sources close to Prime Minister Office revealed that Jeff sought a meeting with Narendra Modi in the coming two days. However, both PMO and Jeff’s team refused to respond regarding the same. News has it that, Jeff will also meet noted celebrities of Bollywood and executives from companies such as Infosys, ICICI Bank Limited and VISA.
Competition Commission of India on Monday alleged that both Amazon and Flipkart of making deals with preferred sellers on their platforms that lead to a foreclosure of other non-preferred sellers from the online marketplace. It was also reported that the under Confederation of All India Traders, 70 million merchants are planning protests in 300 cities across the country this week against the online stores. The above two incidences coincided with Jeff’s visit. With this said, sources have it that, the world’s richest man is here to hold talks with Prime Minister and other main heads to bring the heat down. Indian market is indeed a potential one with an ever-growing digital market over which Jeff is not ready to compromise.
