Squashing the verdict of single judge delivered on January 11 suspending the election schedule announced by State Election Commissioner (SEC) N Ramesh Kumar, Andhra Pradesh High Court on Thursday gave the green signal for the State Election Commission to conduct gram panchayat elections in four phases from February 5.
In a development which came as a jolt to the state government, a division bench of the state high court comprising chief justice A K Goswami and judge C Praveen Kumar directed the Jagan-led state government to move ahead and coordinate with the election body to see that the election process would go smoothly without any trouble to anyone.
To recall, the SEC on January 8th announced the schedule for conduct of elections to gram panchayats in four phases beginning February 5 while the state government opposed the proposal in view of the Covid-19 vaccination program.
While the state government moved High Court on January 11 against SEC Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar’s schedule, the single judge bench gave an order suspending the election schedule. Followed by which, Ramesh Kumar immediately moved the division bench for a review.
