Intending to bring down the child marriages and to encourage girl education, Assam government came up with a scheme which is now winning the hearts of the state citizen. Assam government on Wednesday announced that they would provide a monetary aid of Tola i.e, 10 grams of gold as a wedding gift to the bride. As a part of the newly launched scheme ‘Arundhati’, the government stated that every bride whose marriages are registered under Special Marriage Act, 1954.
To avail this scheme, the bride should not be less than 18 years of age, the groom above 21 years and both of them should have passed Class X while the Adivasi and tea-tribe community can avail the scheme even if they have not cleared Class X exams. Speaking to the media, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that they have allocated Rs. 300 crores in this year’s budget which would hopefully bring down child marriages. The scheme would come into effect from January 1, 2020.
