The central government has, however, responded to the Uranium Mining in Nallamala forest in the parliament session on Wednesday. In an answer to the query raised by Srikakulam TDP MP Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu on permits for uranium mining in Nallamala, Jitendra Singh, the Minister Atomic Energy and Space replied saying “In 2005, there were proposals for uranium mining in Periyakatti and Lampapur. These were also approved by the Ministry of Environment. However, the Hyderabad Water Board has vehemently opposed the idea that they cannot regulate the quality of water supplied to the city due to uranium mining.”
The centre also accepted with the fact that the mining would also affect Srisailam-Nagarjuna Sagar Tiger Reserve and that they are aware of the raising concerns & protests from environmentalists, public groups, political parties and locals about uranium mining in green forests. Thousands of people have already signed up online petitions to stop the mining which would be undertaken on a total of 20,500 acres causing damage to the Tiger Reserve.
