On the verge of beating Brazil as the second worst-hit country in the world, India on Thursday registered a biggest single-day spike so far. According to the recent data from the Union Health Ministry, Indian states recorded 66,999 new positive cases in the last 24 hours taking the total caseload to 2,396,637.

The death toll also increased to 47,033 during the same period with 942 new fatalities. However, going by the claims made by health ministry, India’s case fatality rate(2) is much lower than many other countries as is its deaths per million(34).
On the other hand, officials confirmed that the country as of now has 6,53,622 active cases while 16,95,982 have been cured/discharged/migrated. The total number of samples tested up to 12th August is 2,68,45,688 including 8,30,391 samples tested yesterday, stated Indian Council of Medical Research.

Globally, over 20 million (20,532,835) people have been infected with the novel coronavirus, including 747,845 deaths. The United States continues to remain the worst affected followed by Brazil and India.
