Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam who mesmerised as many as four generations of audience was laid to rest at his farmhouse in Chennai today with full state honours. His last rites were performed by his family members at his farmhouse in Tamaraipakkam adhering to COVID guidelines.
The singer’s mortal remains were brought from the MGM Healthcare hospital to his house at Kamdhar Nagar in Nungambakkam on Friday. On Saturday morning around 7.30 AM, SPB was taken to his Red Hills Farmhouse in Thamaraipakkam in the Thiruvallur district, when well-wishers and emotional fans followed the vehicle to bid SPB a final farewell.
Balu’s son SP Charan who is also singer and producer performed the last rites for his father while the other family members bid a tearful goodbye. The mortal remains of SPB were buried according to the Hindu Brahmin rituals.
The 74-year-old singer, actor, music director, dubbing artist and film producer was pronounced dead at 1.04 PM hours after he tripped into coma on Thursday. Taking to the media waiting at the MGM Hospital, the singer’s son SP Charan announced the news.
Balasubrahmanyam has been in hospital since August 5 after testing positive for COVID-19. He also said that though doctors advised home quarantine and medications, he decided to get admitted to hospital.
He was later shifted on life support and moved to the Intensive Care Unit after his health deteriorated for the first time on August 13th. He is survived by wife Savitri and his two children – daughter Pallavi and son SP Charan.
