A fire followed by an explosion was reported at Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited’s hydel power station at Srisailam dam’s left bank. As many as six maintenance personnel were rescued from the accident that escalated fast on the wee hours of Friday.
Six of the rescued are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Srisailam. Initial reports said that a short circuit led to the fire incident followed by an explosion in unit 4 of the powerhouse.
While thick smoke engulfed the area, making it difficult for the rescue teams to carry the operation to douse the fire and rescue the trapped employees, multiple efforts made by teams to enter the tunnel reportedly failed.

According to the preliminary investigation, it was said that there were 17 staff, including two private service providers at the station which has more than six power generators at its underground plant — each one carries out 150 MW (megawatts) capacity electrical power generators.
Telangana State Generation Corporation (Genco) chairman and managing director D Prabhakar Rao is supervising the rescue operations from the spot. Further information is awaited.
