While the party is all set for the Working Committee meeting on Monday, Congress high command got a jolt from its own cadre while over 20 leaders including some ex-ministers have written to party President Sonia. Seeking an overhaul of the organisational structure and major tweaks to the leadership, the senior leaders hinted a stormy debate in the meeting ahead.
Into details, the letter which was signed by senior leaders like Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prithviraj Chavan, Vivek Tankha and Anand Sharma emphasised on the dynamic leadership in par with the changing political, social and economic scenarios. While a section of the leaders supported a collective leadership, another group has sought the return of Rahul Gandhi as the President.
Within an hour, president Sonia Gandhi was learnt to chose to give a fitting and timely reply to the party cadre. Sources confirmed that Sonia resigned as interim president. In turn, she has reportedly asked the leaders to find a new chief as soon as possible.
Stating that she does not want to carry out the responsibilities any further, Sonia was said to reiterate that she accepted the post of the interim chief after much persuasion only on one condition that the party will find her replacement soon.
While further details are awaited, it was learnt that the Congress high command in the next few hours will make an official announcement.
