Amidst high drama, the election for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, which witnessed pitched battle between ruling TRS and BJP in December last year started off on Thursday.
Since the Mayor post is reserved for a woman candidate, senior TRS leader and Rajya Sabha MP K Keshav Rao’s daughter, G Vijayalaxmi, is one of the front runners. Bonthu Sridevi, who is the wife of Bonthu Rammohan and P Vijaya Reddy, daughter of P Janardhan Reddy and Sindhu Adarsh Reddy, the daughter-in-law of MLC Bhupal Reddy are the other contenders for the post.
While the high command held the suspense till the last second, chaos prevailed at the elections with Vijaya Reddy who won as corporator for the second time from Khairatabad walked out and went incommunicado. It was learnt that the TRS leader who even contested as MLA and is in the second position was disappointed with high command’s choice of going with Vijayalaxmi as Mayor candidate.
Anguished over the development, Vijaya Reddy reportedly stormed out of the GHMC office even before taking the oath. Sources revealed that the high command is now trying to reach back to her and appease one of the influential leaders they have.
