‘Apna time ayega’ has become the slang word for many aspiring youths after the release of ‘Gully Boy’. The phrase now fits well for the movie’s team, Shayadh time aagaya(may be the time has come). Competing with 27 other movies, ‘Gully Boy’ has become India’s official entry in the International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards. In an official announcement made by Supran Sen, the Secretary General for Film Federation of India stated that tough films like ‘Badhaai Ho’, ‘Andhadhun’, ‘Article 15′,’Uri: The Surgical Strike’, ‘Kesari’ and ‘The Tashkent Files’ gave a tough fight, it was a unanimous decision to select ‘Gully Boy’. Featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as main leads, this story of an aspiring rapper was directed by Zoya Akhtar. After its release in February, the film has won at the Melbourne Film Festival and also had a special screening at Japan.
The last Bollywood film that made it to the final five in the Best Foreign Film category list was ‘Lagaan'(2001). ‘Mother India’ (1958) and ‘Salaam Bombay'(1989) are the other two Indian movies to have made it to the top five. We have to wait till February 9, 2020 for the 92nd Academy Awards which will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to see if this Bollywood movie hits new records.
