In yet another horrifying incident which reminded everyone of the Delhi Nirbhaya case, a 19-year-old Dalit woman from Uttar Pradesh who was allegedly gangraped by four upper-caste men in Hathras district on September 14 died on Tuesday undergoing treatment.
The incident which took place two weeks back sparked outrage across the country while the preliminary medical reports revealed that the girl was strangulated, her tongue cut and gangraped in a brutal manner.
The victim was admitted with multiple fractures and spinal cord severely injured and was shifted to Aligarh hospital for treatment, before moving to Safdarjung Hospital in the national capital.
“Fractures at the base of her neck left her struggling to breathe,” said doctors attending the girl. She was allegedly dragged by her dupatta into the fields, where she had been cutting grass with her family. The girl’s family has alleged that UP Police did nothing to help them and took no action against the attackers.
The woman belonged to the Scheduled Castes community, while her attackers were from a so-called upper caste. The four accused who were charged with gangrape and attempt to murder, apart from charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, have been arrested.
They were arrested based on a statement provided by the victim on September 23, when she briefly regained consciousness. She had accused three men – Sandeep, his uncle Ravi (35) and their friend Luv Kush, of committing the crime. Oppositions leaders and film fraternity took to social media calling for severe punishment of the guilty.
