Around 200 policemen deployed at the residence of the victim…curfew in force…mobiles of the victim’s family confiscated…rounding off, tensions ran high in Hathras the native place of the 19-year-old Dalit girl who was brutally raped and hospitalised.
Protests and candle marches were held in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, and Maharashtra on Wednesday after news reports claimed that the Uttar Pradesh Police “forcibly” cremated the body of the Hathras rape victim on Tuesday night.
While the village continued to remain under the scanners of hundreds of police forces, out of nation’s shock, the upper community in UP held a protest to support the accused. Demanded a fair inquiry in the case, the community heads of the village raised slogans in support for the rapists.
It can be noted that earlier, a group known as ‘Savarna Parishad’ had come out in support of the four accused, who are all upper-caste men. To recall Priyanka along with Rahul Gandhi on Thursday made an unsuccessful attempt to march to Hathras.
Security has been beefed up at the Jantar Mantar here where hundreds of civil society activists, students, Aam Aadmi Party and Left leaders gathered to protest against the Hathras incident. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal at Jantar Mantar protest, as well, joined the protest demanding stringent punishment for the culprits.
