In an utter shock to the AP State Election Commission, High Court on Monday suspended the poll schedule announced by the election body for conducting elections to gram panchayats in four phases next month.
The High Court based the ruling based on the petition filed by state CM and YRSCP supremo YS Jaganmohan Reddy against the schedule quoting that it would hamper the COVID-19 vaccination program.
While the ruling came as a morale booster to the state government, it has been unclear if the SEC would move the apex court over the same.
To recall, the State government and SEC are embroiled in a major controversy over the proposed conduct of local elections from February.
Overruling the objections raised by the government, the SEC on Friday night announced the schedule for the polls to be held on February 5, 9, 13 and 17 i.e, in four phases.
This triggered a war of words between the ruling YSRCP leaders and the APSEC Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar who exchanged heated comments amidst which the state government knocked the High Court doors.
