Tensions ran high in Ramatheertham with police detaining key BJP leaders who rallied towards the Lord Rama’s Temple on the hillock.
While the leaders were barricaded at Nellimarla junction, tensions prevailed with activists who resorted to a heated conversation with the police officials who refused to permit more than five people.
Situation gripped out of hands with BJP State president Somu Veerraju and State general secretary Vishnuvardhan Reddy fell unconscious in the scuffle. The leaders were rushed to hospital while the party activists continued to barge through the barricades.
Speaking to media earlier, Somu Veerraju questioned as to why permission was given to opposition leader and TDP national president N Chandrababu Naidu and YSRCP Rajya Sabha member Vijaya Sai Reddy to visit the temple.
To recall, the priests of the ancient temple on Tuesday found the doors broken. The idol in the sanctum sanctorum was desecrated and the severed head portion of the idol was later recovered from a nearby pond the next day. Followed by which, state BJP unit called for ‘Chalo Ramatheertham’ to protest against the repeated desecration of temples.
