In a major development, the Union Cabinet has renamed the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) as the Ministry of Education in the meeting convened on Wednesday. The Modi-led cabinet also cleared the draft of National Education Policy 2020 which aims to revamp the Indian educational structure.
The new Education Policy will replace the three-decade-old policy which was adopted in 1985, during the tenure of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. It can be noted that the policy was last modified in 1992. In the line of this New Education Policy 2020, there will be no separation between co-curricular and extra-curricular areas and all subjects.
Fields like arts, music, crafts, sports, yoga, community service, etc. will be a part of curricular in all education institutes. Modi Government in its first tenure ha constituted a committee headed by TSR Subramanian, a retired bureaucrat, to frame this policy. While the committee submitted its first draft in 2016 itself, it was rejected by the government to make key amendments.
As per the reports, an official announcement regarding the same would be made by Union Minister Prakash Javdekar and HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in a press conference scheduled at 4 PM today.
