The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs like every year released the Ease of Living Index (EoLI) and Municipal Performance Index (MPI) rankings on Thursday. However, this year’s ranking left lakhs of Hyderabad residents and Telangana leaders disappointed as the state slipped down 20 ranks- from 4th place in 2020 to 24th position this year in the Ease of Living Category.
According to the ranks announced, Hyderabad got 24th and 17th in EoLI and MPI rankings respectively, in the category of cities with over one million population. In the next few hours social media flooded with posts from the disappointed citizens. While a few blamed the KCR-led state government for not enough measures, many condemned the list speculating the political interference.
Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi took a strong objection to the ranking, challenged the methodology of the ranking, and found arbitrariness in the index. She also reiterated that companies like JLL and Mercer have declared Hyderabad as the best liveable city for the last five years in a row.
Further, the ranking also started a war of words between state TRS and BJP leaders. The state ruling party leaders allege that the BJP government intentionally reduced the rank of Hyderabad. While a bad drainage system was quoted as the main criteria where Hyderabad lost points, TRS leaders pointed out how Chennai got 4th rank on the list.
In defence, the BJP took the reference of the past statements made by TRS leaders during GHMC polls. The saffron brigade reminded that it was the citizen of Hyderabad who turned against the ruling party post the floods over the misgovernance in the GHMC region.
