Is ‘Diwali satellite pic’ fake?

For sure, Diwali is one of the most-loved festivals in India as it lights up our homes and also firecrackers will light up the cities.

Not just that, we are all familiar with the Diwali satellite pic, claiming to be taken by NASA on Diwali. But it is a fake one. Yes, you heard it right.
This image was actually created by the US Defense Meteorological Satellite Program to show the growth of population over time, with the different colours showing when regions began registering a sharp increase in population, from 1992 to 2003.

Also, even the below picture doesn’t show India on Diwali. This photo comes from Google’s brilliant visualisation of interest in the #MeToo movement, with lights placed to show where search interest was rising.

Last year, Astronaut Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency tweeted a Happy Diwali message with a photo but even that’s not the Diwali satellite pic. It just shows how India looks at night when seen from space.
