Renowned revolutionary poet Varavara Rao, lodged at Taloja Jail for being accused in the Elghar Parishad case was admitted to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital on Thursday evening after he complained of giddiness. Tensions ran high at the hospital while a prisoner who displayed corona symptoms recently died. A senior doctor from the hospital said Rao is now fine and his swab sample has been sent for Covid-19 test.
This came in the wake of Varavara Rao’s family members staged a protest demanding the release of the senior journalists in the view of his ailments. 80-year-old Varavara Rao has been suffering from piles, cardiac issues and is on medication for ulcer and blood pressure upon which his three daughters wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, appealing them to release him on bail.
While his interim medical bail is expected to be heard by a special court on June 2, both Mumbai and Andhra Pradesh police are making arrangements for video conferencing in the jail as family members are denied to meet the poet directly.
