The Facebook account of the man who brandished a gun and opened fire in the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act near the Jamia Millia Islamia University revealed shocking truths behind his attack. The assailant who claimed himself as a right-wing activist was identified as Gopal. When probed into his Facebook profile, it came to the notice of police that the attacker had gone live on Facebook minutes before he opened fire on the protestors. Two of the live videos showed Gopal walking around the venue of the protest looking around with a tense face seemed to be searching for the target.
Hours before the attack, Gopal’s Facebook profile was filled with posts which indicated that he was planning something big and is ready to face the consequences. “On my last journey, drape me in saffron and shout slogans of “Jai Shri Ram,” read one of the posts. Referring to the protest against CAA, he posted a threat saying, “Shaheen Bagh, Game Over”. All the posts were written in Hindi. On the other hand, Facebook India has announced that they are blocking the account of Gopal owing to their rules and regulations.
Shadab Farooq, a mass communication student, was injured in his left hand during the shooting. He was rushed to Holy Family hospital in Jamia Nagar and was later shifted to AIIMS for better treatment. The incidence which took place under the eyes of heavy police and media presence led to high tensions around the premises of Jamia. The incident received a roll of backlash from the citizen and leaders who took to social media to condemn the attack.
