Hours before the four Nirbhaya convicts Pawan Gupta, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Singh and Vinay Sharma are scheduled to be hanged, the Delhi court on Friday postponed the execution. In the haze of review, curative and mercy petitions from the convicts’ end, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana on Friday passed orders which stated that the death warrant has been cancelled and no new date has been given. While a new petition was filed today before the Supreme Court and rejected, Pawan Gupta’s claim of being a minor at the time of 2012 gang-rape and killing was dismissed by the Supreme Court for the second time in two weeks.
Reacting to the orders postponing the execution, Nirbhaya’s mother wept as she said that the convicts are taking advantage of the legal system. Earlier today, Tihar jail authorities filed a status report in the matter and informed the court that the convicts can be hanged separately. But the court rejected the plea stating that the law does not allow separate dates of hanging for the same crime. While the original date of execution was January 22, the mercy petition by Mukesh Singh postponed the date to February 1.
