The wee hours of Friday in Tihar jail are not the same while media and several supporters reached to the premises raising slogans ‘Justice Served’. Minutes after city court refusing to stay the hanging of the four convicted in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.
Calling it an end to seven years of a relentless legal fight, the Delhi’s Tihar jail at 5:30 am on Friday hanged the four convicts Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar (31), and Mukesh Kumar (32) to death. While a Supreme Court Bench comprising Justices R Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan and A S Bopanna dismissed all the pleas filed by the convicts, all the speculations around another postponement cleared around the execution on March 20.
“Thanks to the judiciary” and “the morning of justice” reverberated in Tihar jail premises as Sandeep Goel, Director-General of Tihar jail, confirmed to reporters outside the prison. Following the protocol, their bodies were kept hanging for 30 minutes following which a doctor declared them dead. The bodies will be further sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where a five-member panel will conduct autopsy before disposing them as per their religion.
