In what can be called as an end card to 85 months of a relentless fight for justice, Delhi court on Tuesday issued death warrants against four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya ’s gangrape and murder case. In the line of the warrants issued, the four convicts Akshay Thakur Singh, Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma who were found guilty in the year 2012 will be hanged on January 22 at 7 AM. Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora pronounced the order while the four convicts were produced before the court through video conferencing. This news came as a fresh breath of faith in the judicial system amongst the women community. However, the prosecution said that the convicts are allowed to use their legal remedies within 14 days.
Talking to the media followed by the verdict, Nirbhaya’s mother who has been waging a war to seek justice said- ”This judgement will reinforce people’s faith in the judiciary. I have waited for seven years and my daughter will get justice.” Netizens from across the country welcomed the court’s decision who took to their social media accounts to express their solidarity. Delhi Commission for Women Chief Swati MaliwaI stated that it will stand a win for all the ‘Nirbhayas’ living in this country.
The 23-year-old Nirbhaya(name changed) was gang-raped and murdered by six men on a moving bus on 16 December 2012. While the main accused, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail, another accused was minor during the time of the commission of the crime.
