A 13-year-old Khammam girl set on fire in Telangana last month after she allegedly resisted rape by a 26-year-old man succumbed to the 70 per cent burn injuries on Thursday night. The girl who fought back death for almost 27 days, breathed her last in a hospital in Hyderabad with various parameters gripping out of hands, confirmed the doctors.
It can be recalled that the heinous incident came into limelight weeks later as the accused tried to hide the true threatening the victims family. While the girl who suffered critical burn injuries was admitted to a local hospital and was treated secretly, things came to limelight with parents registered a complaint with police after 2-3 weeks.
In her declaration to the magistrate, the girl identified the man who allegedly assaulted her as Maarayya, the son of Subharao who employed her to look after a bedridden man. The girl told the police that the man had torn her clothes while trying to sexually assault her and later poured petrol on her and set her ablaze when she resisted his advances.
Maarayya was taken into custody and was charged with cases of rape and attempt to murder and for concealing evidence and/or making it disappear. It was revealed that man’s pregnant wife was visiting her parents at the time of the incident.
