In a warning of sorts, the Supreme Court on Thursday permitted the Telangana Government to immersion of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols in Hussain Sagar lake during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations this year. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana, gave the orders after hearing an urgent plea by the Commissioner of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
It can be noted that although Greater Hyderabad Municipality Corporation (GHMC) filed a review petition, the High Court refused to amend the judgment. With which the state government decided to approach the Supreme Court. “This is the last chance. Telangana government should give an undertaking that this immersion will not happen from next year,” it said.
According to statistics, in greater Hyderabad city limits have more than one lakh idols of Lord Ganesha have been erected. Officials estimate that 90 percent of the erected Ganesh idols are made of PoP. With reference to the permission, special pools are being built in 25 ponds in the city. However, it will take a few more days to pull the pools and fill them with water.
