A common man from North India waged a legal war against the public institution for Rs 35. He took on this legal battle for a tenure of long five years and finally won the case getting his money back. In addition, he has benefited 2.98 lakh people with the verdict. With this, the railways had to pay another 2 crores 43 lakhs (altogether).
Getting into details, Sujeet Swamy is an engineer from Rajasthan. On July 2, 2017, he booked a ticket in advance on the train from Rajasthan Kota to Delhi. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, his journey was canceled.
He canceled the ticket. However, of the total refund amount he is supposed to get, he got Rs 35 less than the total. He questioned the railway authorities on the matter. Officials replied that the GST came into effect from July 1 and hence that was cut from the total he is supposed to get as a refund.
He told the court that he had canceled the ticket before July 1, in which case the service charge should not be deducted. The Prime Minister, Union Ministers, and other officials also tweeted about this. In 2019, the Railways announced that they would return the money, after which he stepped down from the fight. But after that, he was paid only Rs 33, which is 2 rupees less than the total he is supposed to get. With this, he entered into a legal battle again that lasted for three more years. Later, he won this battle and was paid the remaining 2 rupees. In addition, the railways have decided to refund 3 lakh people who booked tickets before June 2, 2017.
