An unidentified man who brandished the gun and opened fire in Jamia, raised tensions at the anti-CAA rally on Thursday. The man reportedly opened fire shouting slogans of “Yeh lo azaadi” and “Delhi police zindabad” at the students who set a march from Jamia Milia Islamia University to Rajghat. The videos shot by few of the protestors who took part in the rally are now making rounds on social media. The videos from the attack that is being shared showed the assailant shouting the ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan and warning protesters to chant ‘Vande Mataram’ if they want to stay in India.

The man who was later taken into custody was identified as 31-year-old Gopal. Shadab Farooq, a mass communication student, was injured in his left hand during the shooting. He was rushed to Holy Family hospital in Jamia Nagar and was later shifted to AIIMS for better treatment. The incidence which took place under the eyes of heavy police and media presence led to high tensions around the premises of Jamia. The alerted police shut the entry and exit gates of three Metro stations, Jama Masjid, ITO and Delhi Gate.
On the other hand, this incident has been receiving a roll of outrage from the protestors and leaders from across the nation. Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen took to his Twitter account to ask Prime Minister Modi to identify the assailant by his clothes. “Thanks to @ianuragthaku & all the 9 PM nationalists who have created so much hatred in this country that a terrorist shoots a student while cops watch. Hi @PMOIndia identify him by his clothes,” read his clothes.
