Some tribes have a ritual of using marijuana leaves to make bhang during festivals. It’s an open secret that most of the sages use marijuana while a community of monks is said to be addicted to marijuana to connect with the devotional world. Under the mask of religion, numerous mafia groups are trying to lure youth into consuming marijuana.
The recent marijuana cultivation in the Gachibowli apartment can be quoted as an example of the shocking boom in this culture. It can be noted that the number of drug arrests in the city has exponentially increased especially with sons of biggies in politics in the name of rave parties.
According to the writings of a 16th-century Portuguese historian, bhang was found to be very common in India. Writings also have it that tax was levied as part of an effort to reduce consumption. The attempts to make the consumption of marijuana illegal have been failing for the past 35 years. Research scholars claim the British early 1894 took up research on the use, study, cultivation, trade, and effects of the drug. Some also have proven that the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission has filed a report that the listed usage of Marijuana can cure a few diseases.
The commission also stated that the ultimate victim will be the person consuming but not the society based on which proper action couldn’t be taken. The NDPS Act of 1985 makes it illegal to use marijuana in any form. But bhang is still taken legally in India.
Another study conducted by Drug Dependent Treatment Center in affiliation with AIIMS found that one crore people across the country have been consuming Ganja. While marijuana is consumed by all sections of people, it is the poor who are most vulnerable. It can be noted that some farmers depend on ganja cultivation for their livelihood as it is more profitable than other crops.
While it is a few tribal communities the cultivate the crop and face jail if anything goes wrong, it is the mediators who reap the benefits and make crores of profit. It can also be noted that the people who transport the drug are also prone to adverse situations.
Ganja nowadays is being consumed as a cigar or as a paste. It can be mixed in water or the leaves are directly consumed which is harmful in both ways acting like a psychoactive ingredient. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) mixed with blood directly hits the brain and then releases a chemical called dopamine, which gives an adrenal rush. THC shows effect in seconds for some while it takes minutes for a few.
For those who are addicted to marijuana..and can not sleep if it is not taken regularly. The body does not function properly and the people who consumed it will lose appetite. Although the brain seems to be active when taken, then slows down, the functioning of the lungs of deteriorates. The Heart beats 20 percent higher than normal.
The price of ganja depends on the quality and area. The rate of ten grams of dried ordinary leaf powder is 300–700 rupees. Sheetal, however, is sold for Rs 1,500. High-quality ganja is priced at over Rs 3,000. The same cocaine is priced from Rs 7,000 per gram. The ecstasy pill rate is 1,500 and the heroin rate is above 10,000. The price of ganja is the lowest of all which is easily available.
Ganja is supplied through different means. Until now only milk vans, vegetable vehicles, goods vehicles are used to smuggle ganja. Now smugglers are using the technology to supply ganja. There have also been cases against Amazon. There have been reports in the popular media that Amazon has sold thousands of kilos of cannabis across the country for crores of rupees. In Ayurveda, there seems to be a patent for a drug called Madakari, which is extracted from ganja when there are insomnia and body pains. This drug is given depending on the severity of the disease.
It is need of the hour that the police control the cultivation and supply of marijuana, which has been a social and economic problem for many years. It is necessary to crack down on traders rather than innocents.
