Four people were charred to death in a massive explosion at a stone mining quarry in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district on the late hours of Thursday. According to the early reports, the explosion took place after gelatin sticks loaded on a truck exploded near Hunsodu, 7km from Shimoga.

While the four people who died were reportedly transporting the explosives meant for mining in a truck when the incident happened, police feared more people to be stuck in the area of explosion. “The entire area has been sealed. We can confirm four are dead. Bomb disposal teams will reach here from Mangaluru and Bengaluru in a few hours,” said the senior official.
Two people have been detained and a high-level investigation ordered into the explosion in Shivamogga district, police said on Friday. The detained included a contractor of a stone crushing facility where the blast occurred when a truckload of gelatin. Tensions ran high in the area as there are nearly 100 quarrying sites in the vicinity.
The blast reportedly took place at around 10:20 pm with loud sound and tremors were felt in and around the district while the windows were seen shattered at the vicinity. A few local locals claimed that they ran out of their houses presuming it to be an earthquake.
