Panic clouded almost 80 patients and staff working at a private COVID-19 hospital in Mumbai’s Bhanup area in the early hours of Friday.
While a fire fighting operation is still underway, the death toll has risen to nine in a major fire that broke out around 12.30 AM.
Twenty-two fire engines were rushed to Dreams Mall Sunrise Hospital last night who recovered six bodies.
In an official statement released by Sunrise Hospital, as many as 76 COVID-19 patients were admitted to the hospital, which is located on the third floor of a mall.
Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar who took stock of the situation stated that there will be an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.
The incident comes at a time when India’s financial capital is yet again seeing an upsurge in Covid cases. On Thursday, the city logged 5,504 new infections to post a new high.
