Tensions ran high at Gummanur in Labour Minister Gummanur Jayaram’s Alur Assembly constituency in the wee hours of Friday as a group of gamblers attacked the police officials during the raid. In an incident which shocked the state, a group of villagers attacked the cops in mufti using Chilli powder which a few of the policemen suffered severe injuries.
Into details, with information from credible sources over the mega gambling in Gummanur in Kurnool district, three teams of policemen raided the place with a large number of people indulging in gambling and consuming alcohol.
While a few tried to abscond, police claimed that certain people who claimed themselves influential attacked police which heated up the situations. Having learnt about the attack, SEB Additional SP Gowthami Sali rushed to Gummanur to bring the situation under control.
The teams arrested 32 persons out of the 35 indulged in gambling and boozing. Sources have it that the arrested includes some of the close followers of the Minister Jayaram. A sum of Rs 5,34,150, 35 cars, 38 mobile phones, and six bikes were seized from them.
Meanwhile, Jayaram issued a clarification that he and his brothers are in no way connected with the illegal activities in the village. Further, he asked police to curb the illegal activities with an iron hand.
