Followed by a series of postponements, the Delhi court on Thursday issued a fresh execution date for the four convicts in Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. In the line of the fresh death warrants issued, the convicts, Mukesh Kumar Singh, Vinay Kumar Sharma, Akshay Kumar Singh and Pawan Gupta will be hanged on March 20 at 5.30 AM.
Acknowledging the Delhi government’s statement that the convicts have exhausted all the legal remedies, the Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana issued the verdict. This is the fourth date issued for the execution while the convicts tactically filed plea petitions hours before the execution. This verdict came hours after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy plea of Pawan Gupta, one of the fourth death-row convicts.
Responding to the new dates issued, Asha Devi, mother of Nirbhaya stated that she would only feel contented after the convicts will be hanged. “While dying Nirbhaya took a promise that the responsible people will be punished. Hope March 20 will be the final date of hanging,” she added.
