After almost seven years of relentless fight for justice, the Delhi court on January 8th issued the execution date of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. The court issued death warrants in their name and announced January 22 as the date of their execution. However, Vinay Kumar Sharma and Mukesh Singh two of the four victims had moved the Apex court with the curative petition. Hearing the petition on Tuesday, the five-judge bench of Justices N V Ramana, Arun Mishra, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan unanimously decided to reject the plea stating that there was no merit in their applications.
While the other two convicts Pawan Gupta and Akshay Singh have still not filed their curative plea, Convict Vinay Sharma’s lawyer, A P Singh on January 9th filed the curative petition for his client stating that he was only 19 when he committed the crime. He urged the court to consider his client’s young age and socio-economic factors. Asha Devi, mother of the gang-rape victim, hailed the verdict and said that the day when all the convicts will be hanged, will be the biggest day for her. On the other hand, Tihar jail authorities stated that they are making all the necessary arrangements. All the four convicts are likely to be hanged simultaneously.
