While the nation awaited the execution on March 20 scheduled after three postponements, it has been a rough night for Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, and Mukesh Singh-the four convicts in Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. According to the sources at Tihar jail, the four convicts spent a restless night and has refused to meet anyone in the last few hours.
Reportedly, they were woken up at 3.30 AM and were asked to take a bath while all of them refused. Jail authorities confirmed that the convicts refused to have their breakfast as well and two of them didn’t even have their dinner previous night. In the line of protocol, the whole jail was kept under lockdown while only five members witnessed the execution including jail superintendent, deputy superintendent, the resident medical officer, the district magistrate and hangman. It was heard that as three of the convicts remained nervous and silent except Vinay Sharma who pleaded with jail officials and sought forgiveness.
The four men were brought separately to the gallows, about 150 yards away from their cells. Their hands and legs were tied and the faces will be covered with a black cloth by the Jail officers. Reportedly, the process which started at around 4 AM continued till 6 AM while the convicts were declared dead by the doctor by 6.30 AM.
