Amidst the heaping appeals to Delhi Court to serve justice irrespective of the petitions filed by the Nirbhaya convicts, the four members resorted to another delay tactic. While the four convicts in the case are scheduled to be hanged together at 5.30 am on March 20, this time it was the families of the convicts who appealed to President Ram Nath Kovind.
According to the sources, the presidential office on Monday received 13 petitions urging President Ram Nath Kovind to grant the convicts a death by euthanasia a.k.a mercy death. The letters written in Hindi urged the President to grant permission for the elderly parents, siblings and children of the convicts to end their lives. Stating that there are no sins that cannot be forgiven, the letters mentioned that even “Mahapapi” (great sinners) are forgiven and revenge is not the definition of power. “There is power in forgiving,” the letter read.
While the President has already rejected the mercy petitions filed by the convicts, several petitions filed by the convicts before Delhi court, Delhi High Court and Supreme Court still laid pending. This move has been receiving a wave of criticism as a few human rights organisations stood in support of the families. With only five days remaining, the awaits the President’s reaction to the most controversial cases the country has seen in recent times.
