Amidst the protest over the delay in execution of the four convicts in the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in 2012, Delhi government on Friday issued fresh death warrants. In the line of the fresh warrants, the four will now be executed at 6 am on February 1, said the Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora.
While the authorities at Delhi’s Tihar Jail sought fresh death warrants against the convicts, the Delhi government issued new death warrants dated to exactly 14 days from the day of issuance. The orders came hours after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected a mercy plea filed by Mukesh Singh, one of the convicts. While the convict filed a mercy plea, Mukesh had informed the Delhi High Court that President of India and he should be given a minimum 14 days notice between the rejection of his mercy petition and scheduled date of execution. However, President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday rejected the plea followed by the ministry’s and lieutenant governor of Delhi’s recommendation.
