After years of court hearings and hundreds of appeals, the convicts of Nirbhaya have finally got the last chance to apply for mercy plea. The Tihar Jail administration on Thursday, has sent the notices to the four convicts of the Nirbhaya case giving a deadline of seven days to appeal to President for mercy plea. According to the norms, the notices were read out in both Hindi and English to the convicts and were handed over to the convicts on October 29. Tihar Jail Director-General Sandeep Goel stated that the entire process has been videographed.
Reacting to this, victim’s mother Asha Devi said that the accused should have been hanged long before the Supreme Court sentenced them in 2017. “I have been struggling for the past seven years. I believed in the judicial system and the authorities must take the right steps,” she added. On the other hand, if the President of India rejects the ’Mercy Petition’ against the Capital Sentence, the four accused Vinay Sharma, Mukesh, Akshay Kumar Singh and Pawan Gupta will be sentenced to death.
