Shopping in Anna Nagar, T.Nagar and Besant Nagar might be the most enjoyable part for Chennaians but no doubt finding a parking slot is a nightmare. Not only Chennai, parking has been a headache not only for the citizen but also for the traffic control personnel especially on weekends and during festival season. To mitigate this, the Greater Chennai Corporation has come with a hassle-free on-street parking system which now turned into a success story. GCC in collaboration with S.S. Tech and Toorkmedia Services has come up a Smart Parking mobile application which helps the citizen to find a parking slot in 80 locations across the city.
As a part of the first phase, GCC implemented the ‘On Street Smart Parking Management System’ in 7,667 slots across Chennai which will be further increased to 23,000 in the next few months. The public can download ‘GCC Smart Parking’ app in their mobile phones, register the key in the location they are headed to, to check the number of parking slots available in the area. To make it more easy for the citizen, GCC stated that the slots can be booked beforehand from the doorsteps itself. The parking fee can be paid online or in cash.
A total of 58 attendants, wearing the uniform with the GCC logo, caps and shoes have been appointed to collect the parking fees. “The parking charge will be ₹20 per hour for cars, and ₹5 per hour for motorcycles. We are also looking into introducing monthly parking passes along roads in residential areas may be priced at ₹1,500 to ₹2,000,” said an official. Speaking on the same, the citizen opined the step to be a timely solution for the parking problem in the city.
