Calling it a “bad day for Rajya Sabha”, Chairman of the Upper House M Venkaiah Naidu suspended 8 MPs, including TMC’s Derek O’Brien and AAP’s Sanjay Singh over the unparliamentary behaviour in the house. A day after the Rajya Sabha saw ruckus over the controversial agriculture bills, the issue is set to rock both Houses of Parliament on Monday as well.
Derek O Brien, Sanjay Singh, Raju Satav, KK Ragesh, Ripun Bora, Dola Sen, Syed Nazir Hussain and Elamaran Karim were the MPs suspended for one week. Tensions ran high in the house while the 8 opposition MPs refused to leave despite Deputy Chairman’s consistent requests. Amid the chaos, the House has adjourned again for 30 minutes.
“Suspension won’t silence us. We will stand with farmers in their fight. Deputy chairman throttled parliamentary procedures yesterday. Suspension of MPs exposed the coward face of BJP. People will see through the attempt to divert attention from their undemocratic actions,” stated CPM MP Elamaran Karim after the suspension.
Proceedings of the Rajya Sabha resumes after half an hour with Bhubaneswar Kalita as the presiding officer. Reiterating the rule of the House, Kalita asks the eight suspended oppositions members to leave Rajya Sabha amid loud sloganeering.
