A week after the Apex court was astonished over the 2,556 pending cases against MP-MLAs, the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled out a sensational order. Directed the Chief Justices of all High Courts to prepare an action plan in order to expeditiously deal with pending cases, a bench of Justices NV Ramana, Surya Kant and Hrishikesh Roy has now issued directions to frame an action plan with nine guidelines.
In the line of the orders issued, Chief Justice of each High Court should formulate and submit an action plan regarding the number of special courts, pending cases in each district and expected time for case disposal. The Chief Justice must also designate a Special Bench to monitor the progress of the cases.
Within a week span, the comments and suggestions of the Chief Justices of the High Courts will be sent to the Secretary-General of the Supreme Court. The COVID-19 condition should not be an impediment to the compliance of this direction, as these matters could be conveniently heard through video conferencing.
The Court passed the directions in a batch of matters including a PIL filed by Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking the expeditious disposal of cases against legislators
