Making the hitches between the Union Finance Ministry and Andhra Pradesh state government obvious, Polavaram fund release has yet again turned into a focal point in state political circles.
Hours after the finance ministry has signalled that there will be a fund cut to the tune of about Rs 35,150 crore, Chief Minister Jagan has made interesting comments welcoming a fresh controversy.
Re-iterating that Polavaram Irrigation Project (PPA) is a national project, CM Jagan stated that it was Union government’s responsibility to complete the project as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. “State government is only an executing authority of the project being monitored by Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) under Government of India,” he averred.
The statement came after the Chief Minister held a review meeting on the project on Saturday after the state government has proposed the extra budget release of Rs 2,234 crore by the Union Ministry of Finance (MoF) to the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS).
It is worth recalling that in March, the Union Jal Shakti Ministry stated in Parliament that out of 1,05,601 Project Displaced Families of Polavaram project, rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) works with respect to only 3,922 families has been completed.
