Police have made preliminary arrests of farmers across the joint Warangal district. In Ainovolu, Jafargarh, and Dharmasagar mandals of the district, they went to the houses of farmers from midnight and arrested them.
Farmers’ unions on Wednesday called for a national highway blockade, demanding that the government permanently repeal Land Pooling GO 80A. The police arrested the farmers and shifted them to the local police station as they noticed that there was a possibility of a large influx of farmers from different parts of the state.
Farmers strictly opposed the police who are making early arrests in order to prevent their protest against the system. Buddha Peddanna, joint Warangal district convener of the Farmers ‘United Action Committee, warned that the farmers’ movement could not be stopped with detentions.
“Are farmers not even allowed to conduct their protests against anything as per the constitution? Isn’t this a democratic country?” he questioned. Critics said it was immoral to obstruct farmers who were simply preparing for peaceful protests. The elder leaders of other political parties alleged that the police were showing zeal and harassing the farmers.
