While the speculations that Captain Amarinder Singh would hold a meeting with senior BJP leaders, Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday announced his resignation from the post of Punjab Congress chief. In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu, however, said he will continue to serve the party.
“The collapse of a man’s character stems from the compromise corner, I can never compromise on Punjab’s future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab,” he wrote in the letter. “Therefore, I hereby resign as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress,” he further wrote. Following the resignation, Gulzar Inder Chahal steps down as Punjab Congress treasurer.
It can be noted that only in the month of July did the Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi had overthrown Sunil Jakhar to make Navjot Singh Sidhu the new Punjab Congress Chief. Sources close to Sidhu confirmed that the cricketer-turned-politician was upset about the cabinet changes made by new Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
Due to the ongoing political crisis in the state, Chief Minister Charanjit Channi has called an emergency meeting with all his cabinet colleagues.
